Collection and treatment of municipal wastewater is a public health function. Human sewage contains potentially disease-causing microorganisms. Collecting sewage from homes and businesses serves to keep these disease sources away from the public so that people do not become ill. Wastes from industrial and commercial activities may contain toxic chemicals. Collecting wastes from industries and businesses keeps potential toxins away from the public so that people do not become ill.

The mission of the Wastewater Collection Division is to operate the sanitary sewer system in a manner that provides for the efficient removal of wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries and convey those wastes efficiently to the Water Reclamation Facility for treatment.
